VISHU
MONTH OF APRIL usally on 14th. According to the traditional Malayalam
Calendar, it is the 1st day of the first month “Medam” of the New
Year. It is the astronomical New Year Day When the Sun Crosses the
Equator.
The “VISHUKKANI” is a ritual arrangement with auspicious articles
like Raw rice, Jack fruit, Coconuts, Gold coins, Golden cucumber, Metal
mirror, some coins in Silver cup, Flowers of the Konna tree (Cussia
Fistula) & a Holy text, in a bell metal vessel called “URULI” & both
side of the Uruli have two standing oil lamp (NILAVILAKKU).
On the either side of the Kani are place with a chair facing it.
Family members are taken BLINDFOLDED and then their blindfolds are
removed and they view the “VISHUKKANI”.
After “VISHUKKANI” the very next attractive feature is “KAAYI
NEETAL” - Where the ELDER Members in the family gift MONEY to the
YOUNGER ones. And everyone together in the family starts to burst the
cracker & enjoy through out.
And hence MALAYALIE’S being their first day of the year by waking upin front of KANNI.
